Guadeloupe
A smooth chain of volcanic islands stretches in a smooth arc in the eastern Caribbean Sea. These are the Lesser Antilles, which separate the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. If you look at the map of the region, you can see a large island with unusual outlines in this island necklace. Most of all, he looks like an outlandish butterfly spreading its wings in the middle of a sunlit ocean. Guadeloupe is located here, a small country with an interesting history and magnificent nature.
Where to find Guadeloupe on the map
Guadeloupe is an overseas territory of France and occupies not only the island of the same name in the Caribbean Sea in the West Indies, but also several small islands located nearby. The time indicators in the capital of Guadeloupe are seven hours behind Moscow; the generally accepted currency is the French franc. The population of Guadeloupe speaks universal English fluently, considering French as their native language, slightly flavored with the local dialect (Patois).
Climate
Guests of the island will enjoy the mild and even climate of this area. The average air temperature is +26 Celsius. In December and February it gets a little cooler, in March and May the air heats up to +32 degrees. Trade winds help to soften the heat. In July and November, tropical hurricanes occur here.
The island of Guadeloupe consists of two large peninsulas, which form a pattern resembling butterfly wings on the map. The western wing (Bas-Ter Peninsula) has a pronounced relief – hills and low mountains predominate here. The natural landscape is dominated by the Soufriere volcano (about one and a half kilometers above sea level). The lush rainforest is inhabited by birds, small rodents (mainly rats and rabbits) and medium-sized iguanas. The eastern, flat part of Guadeloupe is called the Grande Terre.
History
Guadeloupe was discovered by Christopher Columbus for the people of Europe. It happened on November 4, 1493. Before that, the island was first inhabited by the Arawak Indians, and then, from about the 8th century, they were replaced by the warlike Caribs. But the Caribs themselves suffered the same fate with the arrival of the French conquerors on the island in 1635. Enterprising French have established sugar cane plantations on the island. In the 18th century, Guadeloupe was claimed by the British, but the French regained all the rights to own this territory and retain them to this day.
Attractions
Guadeloupe, despite its diminutive size, can interest tourists with numerous attractions. The giant Bas-Ter Island National Park (it is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) features an abundance of unique plant species among picturesque rivers and waterfalls. Magnificent beaches and gentle Atlantic waves (the water temperature here is +25 all year round) will complement your stay on the island with a comfortable vacation.
The capital of Guadeloupe is the city of Bas Ter. This charming little town is rich in architectural ensembles in the colonial style. Fort Delgri, the ancient market, the Conseil Général Palace, the Palais de Justice and many other historical and architectural monuments of French Guadeloupe will magically transport guests of the city to the past, allowing them to feel the unique flavor of this unique corner of the West Indies.
